In 1947, Lord Mountbatten, grandson of Queen Victoria, assumes the post of last Viceroy after 300 years of British Rule. He is charged with handing India back to its people and lives upstairs in the Viceroy’s House, the home of the British rulers, whilst 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants live downstairs. Conflict erupts during this birth of a nation, and the decision is made to create a new Muslim homeland, Pakistan, with reverberating consequences.
